What happens when you call

Three steps, and you know where you stand before booking.

What happens when you call

  1. Tell us whether the code has a dot in itA bare E number is an Avanta or Tzerra. Something like A02.06 is the Ace platform, where the letter tells us how serious it is before we ask anything else.
  2. The likely part, and a realistic slotWe name the likely part and a realistic slot. If we cannot reach you today we say so on the phone, not after you have waited in.
  3. The engineer attends and runs a full diagnosticA written breakdown before any repair begins, and nothing goes ahead until you agree.

Not every Remeha code is a fault, and one of the three sorts clears itself. The Ace platform separates a warning, meaning a problem may be coming, from a blocking code, meaning it stopped itself and will restart, from a locking code, meaning it has stopped for good. People book an engineer for something that would have cleared by teatime. We are the London firm that tells you whether it is the boiler or the cylinder before anyone attends.

Remeha fault codes, and the three sorts of them

Two systems. Avanta and Tzerra show a bare E number. The Ace platform shows a letter, two numbers and a dot, and the letter carries the meaning.

A02

Remeha A02: warning, blocking or locking, and why it matters

Codes like A02.06 come from the Ace models, and the class matters more than the number.

A warning says a problem may be developing while the boiler runs on. Mention at the next service.

A blocking code means it stopped itself over something temporary and restarts once that clears, low pressure being the usual one. The manual is explicit that several need no action.

A locking code means it stays down until reset. Repeated locking on the same code needs an engineer, not another reset.

E4

Remeha E4: ignition, and the three different faults behind it

E4 covers ignition and hides three situations needing three different repairs: no spark, a spark but no flame, or a flame the boiler cannot detect. No spark points at the electrode, a spark without flame at the gas supply, an undetected flame at the sensing side. Ordering an electrode for all three is how people pay twice. Try a hob first, and in winter thaw the condensate pipe.

E0

Remeha E0: flow or return sensor fault

The boiler cannot get a sensible reading from one of its temperature sensors. On an Avanta that is the sensor itself, its plug or a broken wire far more often than the heat exchanger it sits on.

Worth testing rather than assuming, because a sensor reading wrongly and a sensor reading nothing produce different codes on this platform.

E1 or E2

Remeha E1 or E2: flow too hot, or the return hotter than the flow

E1 means flow temperature passed its set maximum. E2 is stranger: the return reads hotter than the flow, which cannot happen normally, because water leaves the boiler hot and comes back cooler.

So either the sensors are wrong or fitted the wrong way round, or water is not moving through the boiler. Both come back to circulation: air, a jammed pump, a closed valve or sludge.

E3

Remeha E3: control unit or earth fault

Check the earth before anybody quotes for a board. A poor or missing earth at the appliance produces this on a control unit that is perfectly sound, and it is the cheaper of the two by a wide margin.

If the earth is good and the code stays, then it is the control unit.

E7

Remeha E7: flame detection

The boiler cannot confirm a flame it should be seeing. That points at the sensing electrode and its lead first, then the gas valve.

Not the same as E4. E4 covers ignition, where the boiler is trying to light. E7 is about detection once it has. Ordering an ignition electrode for an E7 changes a part that was never at fault.

More

Every other Remeha code

CodeWhat it meansWhat it usually turns out to be
E0Flow or return sensor faultThe sensor, its plug, or a broken wire
E1 / E2Flow too hot, or return hotter than flowCirculation. E2 is impossible normally, so suspect sensors or flow
E3Control unit or earth faultCheck the earth first, then the board
E7Flame detectionThe sensing electrode, then the gas valve
E8 / E10Fan or air supply, or overheatThe fan or flue, or circulation. Not the burner
E43 / E44Communication between componentsOften clears on one reset. Twice means look properly
Did you know

Several Remeha blocking codes carry the instruction that no action is required and the appliance restarts itself. That is unusual candour, and the opposite of how most people read a display, where any number looks like a breakdown. If yours shows a code but the heating works, note it and see whether it clears before booking anyone.

Common Remeha problems with no code at all

Two account for most calls, and one is not your boiler.

Lukewarm hot water, and whose boiler is it anyway

Hot water never properly hot, heating faultless. The plate heat exchanger is scaling. The heating circuit is sealed so it scales once; the hot water side takes fresh mains at every tap. A diverter fault gives none at all, and an annual service catches it early.

Is the Remeha even yours? Remeha build a great deal of commercial plant, and in London a Quinta Ace or Gas series boiler is often communal, serving a block from a basement. If so the freeholder or managing agent instructs the repair, not you.

Out of hours: we say honestly whether it is a tonight job or a morning job, which is what emergency boiler repair is for. Landlords: the same visit can cover the gas safety certificate.

One of these three clears itself

A warning says a problem may be coming. A blocking code means it stopped itself and will restart. A locking code means it has stopped for good. Read us the code and we will say which.

Call 0203 868 6134

Which Remeha have you got?

The code format tells you the generation. The label tells you whose it is.

Avanta, Tzerra and Calenta are the domestic combis and show bare E numbers. Quinta Ace and the Gas series are light commercial, use the dotted format, and in a block usually live in a shared plant room. Read us the serial when you ring; it matches your appliance to the right parts. We work on every make of boiler.

Hard water, and what it does to a Remeha

The big difference between here and where it was designed.

Water here carries roughly 277 milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre, from chalk the Thames and the Lea run through, so the plate heat exchanger scales faster than the manual allows, in Sutton and Cheam as Highgate.

Did you know

Scale drops out of solution faster the hotter the water gets. A combi delivering taps at 65 degrees furs up its plate heat exchanger faster than one at 50, which is still hot enough to scald, and turning the dial down costs nothing. It applies to the tap setting, not a cylinder, which must reach 60 degrees.

Under eight years old it is a repair without argument. Between eight and fourteen only a control unit or heat exchanger changes it, and Remeha sit at the solidly built end of the market, so a mid-life one is worth keeping. Past fifteen availability decides, and communal plant is a capital item for the freeholder. See boiler replacement and our cost guide.

Remeha with a cylinder, and unvented systems

Most firms here are combi-only, which suits few large houses.

A Remeha system or heat only model runs a stored cylinder with its own thermostat, immersion element and, if unvented, its own safety devices. Remeha call it a calorifier, and their guidance is blunt: an empty one gives cold taps whatever the boiler does. When hot water goes the boiler takes the blame and is often fine, the fault being a cylinder sensor, a motorised valve, or a scaled immersion element.

Water at its tundish means a safety device has failed, and is never something to cap. That needs G3 as well as Gas Safe registration and we hold both, so unvented cylinder repair happens on the same visit, and houses across Kingston and Surbiton usually get a scale reducer with it.

Safety

If you smell gas: do not touch any switches. Open the windows, leave the property, then call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. That line is free and open 24 hours. Call them before you call us.

If a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding: get everyone out immediately, then call 999 if anyone feels unwell. Do not go back in until the property has been ventilated and checked.

If the boiler locks out repeatedly: try one reset. If it locks out again straight away, stop. Repeated resets hide a fault that is still there, and on a gas appliance that is not a risk worth taking.

Under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, only a Gas Safe registered engineer may work on gas appliances. Never open the boiler casing yourself.

Remeha boiler repair FAQs

My Remeha shows a code but the heating still works. Is that a fault?

Possibly not. On the Ace platform Remeha separate three sorts: a warning, meaning a problem may be developing while the boiler runs on; a blocking code, meaning it stopped itself and will restart; and a locking code, meaning it stays down until reset. Several blocking codes say no action is required, so note the code and see whether it clears. No heat at all? See emergency boiler repair.

What does E4 mean on a Remeha Avanta?

Ignition, covering three situations that need three different repairs: no spark, a spark but no flame, or a flame the boiler cannot detect. No spark points at the electrode, a spark without flame at the gas supply, an undetected flame at the sensing side. Ordering an electrode for all three is how people pay twice. Worn electrodes are what an annual service catches early.

What does E2 mean, and how can the return be hotter than the flow?

It cannot in a working system, which makes E2 useful. Water leaves hot and returns cooler, so if the return reads hotter the sensors are wrong or fitted the wrong way round, or water is not moving through the boiler. Both come back to circulation: air, a jammed pump, a closed valve or sludge. A recurring E1 or E2 is a system problem, and often a power flush is the answer.

My Remeha is in a shared plant room. Can I book a repair?

Usually not on your own. Remeha build a lot of commercial plant, and in London a Quinta Ace or Gas series boiler is often communal, serving a block from a basement. If the appliance is not inside your home the freeholder or managing agent instructs the work. Establish that before arranging a visit nobody has authorised. Landlords still need the flat's own gas safety certificate.

Is a Remeha worth repairing?

Usually longer than most. Under eight years it is a repair without argument. Between eight and fourteen only a control unit or heat exchanger changes that, and Remeha sit at the more solidly built end of the market, so a mid-life one is worth keeping rather than writing off on age. Past fifteen availability decides. See boiler replacement.

Do you work on a Remeha with a cylinder?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. Remeha call a cylinder a calorifier, which confuses people. It is a second appliance with its own thermostat, immersion element and, if unvented, its own safety devices, and their guidance notes that an empty one gives cold taps whatever the boiler does. Unvented work needs G3 as well as Gas Safe registration and we hold both. See unvented cylinder repair.

Other boiler makes we repair

Few makes tell you whether a code needs anybody before you ring.

No gas supply? Plenty of London flats run without one, so we also cover electric boiler repair.
